Apple Introduces The New iPhone OS4
From the WWDC
Steve Jobs introduced the new iPhone OS 4 at the WWDC, Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference
on Monday, June 7, 2010. In a few words, the new iPhone is prettier, slimmer and faster.
What more could you ask for?
Exclusive iPhone Provider in the US
In the United States, AT&T is still the exclusive provider for iPhones. Many users
were disappointed that Jobs did not announce Verizon as a newly added provider.
Recently, Verizon and Google announced a partnership to create a new tablet that
would compete against the iPad. So what I’m wondering is: How can you expect
Apple to approve Verizon as an iPhone provider if Verizon has committed to
the other side. It’s like Verizon’s son has married the daughter of your rival. Duh!
The only way now for Verizon to partner with Apple is if the son and daughter get divorced.
Even so, these things take time to heal. In my opinion, I think if Verizon was a little more patient,
they could have gotten the Apple deal.
iPhone Features At A Glance
Back to the new iPhone. USA Today, MacWorld and PCWorld have reported on the
newest features of the new product. It will be released in the US on June 24.
Price: $199 USD for 16GB model with a two-year AT&T contract; $299 USD for a 32 GB
capacity. The older iPhone 3GS will be sold for $99 USD with a two-year contract.
Battery: A bigger battery is featured extending talk time up to seven hours on the 3G; browsing time to six hours
on the 3G; Wi-fi browsing to ten hours; video playback up to 10 hours; and audio playback up to 40 hours.
Camera: 5 Megapixels (or 5 million picture elements – dots), LED flash, records HD video in 720p;
has tap-to-focus video and built-in video editing with optional iMovie app (about $5). The 3GS has
3 megapixels by comparison.
Video Chat: You can make two-way video calls. If you are familiar with the Jetsons cartoon from the 60s
Jobs said he always dreamed about being able to make a video call just like in the cartoon. He was pleased
to see what technology could do to get him closer to this dream. The Jetsons still run today on syndicated television.
Design: The steel frame functions as the phone’s antenna; custom glass is used on front and back; it is
reportedly stronger glass.
New OS has 100 new features. The biggest feature is the capability to do multitasking.
So for e.g. Jobs demonstrated playing a song while he switched back and forth between Safari and Mail. Jobs said when multitasking is done right, it will not use up more battery power than necessary and a user can pick up where he left off from before as you would expect. To switch between apps, you double tap on the Home button; this brings up a few apps in the dock. To switch over to your other app, tap on the icon. If you don’t see the app you want to switch to, a swipe on the iPhone will display a new set of icons on the dock; this swiping for a new set of icons idea was take from the iPad. A few other features: Mail has been enhanced to display multiple email account inboxes and the ability to switch between them; and, iBooks has been added to the iPhone library. If you start reading a book on the iPad, you can synch the bookmarks between the iPad and iPhone. After synching, you could then continue reading on the iPhone where you left off from the iPad.
